Shared Writing Project We are starting an information writing unit for second trimester. We are going to start off the unit by writing "how to" books. We are exploring examples of how to books and even brainstorming ideas for how to books. As a shared writing project, we are going to make bird feeders and then write a how to book since we will be experts on this topic. Please bring in a toilet paper roll (or two) with your child by Tuesday, December 8. Please let me know ( at aholt@cpsk12.org or comment below)  if you have any bird seed or Crisco that you would be willing to donate for this project too. As always, your generosity is GREATLY appreciated.

Intruder Drill

Dear First Grade Parents and Guardians,

Today, November 20th at 1:45pm (during specials) your child participated in an Intruder Drill at Rock Bridge Elementary.

Today all first grade teachers taught their students ALICE, which stands for:

A – Alert – You will hear an alert.
L – Lockdown – Lock your door and put things in front of it.
I – Inform – You will get further information to help you know what to do next.
C – Counteract – If needed, throw things to distract or hurt the intruders.
E – Evacuate – If you are able to run from the building, go to your school’s safe spot.

We showed our students a video called “ALICE – Your Feet Will Know Where to Go” created by Cedar Ridge students and staff members.  You can view the video here:  http://bit.ly/VnIXdy

From the video, your child also learned that an intruder is: “an unwelcome person that can come and cause danger” and who can “be dressed in any clothing and could be carrying a weapon.”  Students also learned to “stay calm, be brave, and listen to the instructions your teacher gives you.”

Please remember that we practice Intruder Drills and other drills (Fire, Severe Weather, and Earthquake) to help students and staff to be prepared if an emergency occurred.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher, Dr. Ryan Link or
Ms. Bonita Benson.

Sincerely,

RBE First Grade Teachers

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS about Reading Homework

Why does my child bring home the same book more than one time?
*The purpose of reading homework in first grade is to increase students’ reading fluency.  One way to increase fluency is to do repeated readings with a familiar book, which is why your child might bring home the same book more than one time.
Has my child memorized his/her reading book?
*Most of the books that your child brings home are books that he/she has read during reading group and also read during “read to self” and “read to someone” times.  This means it is a familiar book, which is the type of book that our first graders need to be reading the most.
The book that my child brought home seems too easy.  Why isn’t he/she bringing home harder books?
*Research has proven that “students need enormous quantities of successful reading to become independent, proficient readers.”  Successful reading means that the child has a “high level of accuracy, fluency, and comprehension” when reading a book.  When students read “high success” books (familiar, independent level books), then they are able to “integrate complete skills and strategies into an automatic reading process.” (Six T’s of Effective Literacy Instruction, by Richard Allington – 2002)
The book that my child brought home seemed hard.  Is it ok to read the book with or to my child?
*Yes, of course!  While children need lots of experiences reading familiar, independent level books, they also need to hear fluent reading from family members and friends.  Spending time reading with your child is a wonderful way to share books that he/she is interested in, but is not ready to read independently.
I have observed my child reading chapter books at home.  Why isn’t he/she bringing chapter books for homework?
*While your child may be capable of reading all of the words in a harder (chapter) book, we also want your child to be able to comprehend texts successfully.  We want our first graders to understand that reading isn’t just saying the words on a page, but it is actively thinking about a book – before, during, and after we reading.  Reading comprehension involves making predictions, making connections, asking questions, summarizing, retelling, making inferences, and more!
What should I do when my child gets stuck on a word?
*Your child has learned strategies for decoding unfamiliar words.  When your child gets stuck, encourage him/her to try all of the strategies before telling them the word. These strategies are:
1. Eagle Eye – look at the picture
2. Lips the Fish – get your mouth ready for the first sound
3. Chunky Monkey – find a chunk/little word inside the word that you know
4. Sliding Snake – blend sounds together
5. Elephant Ears – does it sound right?
6. Tryin’ Lion—reread the sentence or try another word that makes sense

CPS Zoo

CPS has an AMAZING program through the science department. It is called CPS Zoo!  Each week we get a brand new stuffed animal sent to us in the mail. Every week, we get to spend that week learning about that animal. Getting our new animal is one of the highlights of our week. We have learned so much!

On Monday, when our animal arrives, we get to read the clues on the outside of the box and try to guess our animal. Our lion says ROARRRRR!!!!

Along with our animal, we get books about the animal, learning links and a tape measure to see how big our animal is in real life. A lion is the length of about two first graders! Wow!!

Usually we are able to find a live camera that we can watch! We've watched elephants at the San Diego Zoo, lions at the National Zoo and stingrays at the Georgia Aquarium! As we do our research, we make sure to put all of our facts into our CPS Zoo Animal Research Notebook. This will be a great collection of animal facts at the end of the year.

Each week we get to learn how to draw our animal too! Here is one of our lions.

Here are a few more of our adventures with the CPS Zoo.

First Weeks of School Part II

I'm a little late on posting Part II but here it is...

Here is a short recap of the learning and fun that is taking place in room 15.

We have been busy learning about writing workshop. We made our heart maps about things we love! This will help us when we are struggling with ideas for our writing. Here are two of our friends working on their heart map.

We have been introducing parts of Daily 5.  We have learned all about Read to Self. We know there are three ways to read, how to pick a "just right" book and how to pick a good spot to read. We LOVE getting in a comfy spot to read. We are working VERY hard to build our reading stamina. (Ask your first grader what stamina means.) So far, we are up to 10 1/2 minutes. Here are a few of our students reading from their book boxes in a comfy spot around the room.

We have enjoyed MakerSpace Fridays in the media center. Last week, we made pencil toppers and bookmarks out of Duck Tape. We had great 5th grade mentors from Ms. Verhagen's class to help us. This Friday we will be in the media center again for MakerSpace Friday. I wonder what Mrs. McKinzie has in store for us this time!

Until next time friends!! Enjoy your week!

First Weeks of School Part I

Wow! I can't believe that we have been in school for 14 days! As the saying goes, "Time flies when  you're having fun!" We 've been getting to know each other and learning all about first grade.  It's been a busy 14 days for us but here is a quick glimpse into our world!

We have learned how to stand in the perfect first grade line - Voices off. Eyes forward. Hands safe.

and a funny (but not so perfect) first grade line! I love room 15's sense of humor!

We've explored math manipulative!

Carson even made an addition sentence with his arithmetic rack. 3 + 2 + 5 + 3 + 6 + 1 = 20

We've made sure to give our first grade brains a break now and then to enjoy some dancing. Check out Go Noodle!

We have been working hard to review and practice our handwriting!

Part II will be up this week! Stay tuned.......
