First Weeks of School Part II

I'm a little late on posting Part II but here it is...

Here is a short recap of the learning and fun that is taking place in room 15.

We have been busy learning about writing workshop. We made our heart maps about things we love! This will help us when we are struggling with ideas for our writing. Here are two of our friends working on their heart map.

We have been introducing parts of Daily 5.  We have learned all about Read to Self. We know there are three ways to read, how to pick a "just right" book and how to pick a good spot to read. We LOVE getting in a comfy spot to read. We are working VERY hard to build our reading stamina. (Ask your first grader what stamina means.) So far, we are up to 10 1/2 minutes. Here are a few of our students reading from their book boxes in a comfy spot around the room.

We have enjoyed MakerSpace Fridays in the media center. Last week, we made pencil toppers and bookmarks out of Duck Tape. We had great 5th grade mentors from Ms. Verhagen's class to help us. This Friday we will be in the media center again for MakerSpace Friday. I wonder what Mrs. McKinzie has in store for us this time!

Until next time friends!! Enjoy your week!

First Weeks of School Part I

Wow! I can't believe that we have been in school for 14 days! As the saying goes, "Time flies when  you're having fun!" We 've been getting to know each other and learning all about first grade.  It's been a busy 14 days for us but here is a quick glimpse into our world!

We have learned how to stand in the perfect first grade line - Voices off. Eyes forward. Hands safe.

and a funny (but not so perfect) first grade line! I love room 15's sense of humor!

We've explored math manipulative!

Carson even made an addition sentence with his arithmetic rack. 3 + 2 + 5 + 3 + 6 + 1 = 20

We've made sure to give our first grade brains a break now and then to enjoy some dancing. Check out Go Noodle!

We have been working hard to review and practice our handwriting!

Part II will be up this week! Stay tuned.......
